List of Things to Do
I can usually count on Josh to supply material to share here. But this time, it is Andrew who continues to surprise me.
He already has had a list of landmarks he wants to visit when he grows up. But last night, he spontaneously started writing a list (a list maker, like his mom!) of “Places I want to go” – spontaneously, in the middle of doing his homework last night, which had nothing to do with places or travel.
His list starts with Egypt. After reviewing the landmark post linked above, you can easily see why that is included. Next comes Canada, a topical place with the ongoing XXI Winter Olympics. Thirdly, he wants to visit Haiti.
Sidebar: I’ve told him little about the quake that has weighed heavily on my mind, since I know people directly involved with mission work there, specifically at an orphanage. Both people I know were in process of adopting Haitian children when the quake hit, and have since been working diligently to have their adoptive children granted humanitarian parole visas. By the way, they may actually take custody of their adoptive girls tomorrow! I digress. As far as what I’ve told Andrew about it, it has been limited, and certainly, he has seen no images of the disaster. But he knows the earth moved and buildings fell down. Then his school, just this week, announced that during March, they were going to collect money to donate to Haiti. All this is to say, it is on his mind, apparently.
The last place on his hurriedly made list (because Mom was pushing him to get back to his homework before we had to leave for Awana), was California. California, in case you don’t have a Lego-crazed child, is the home of Legoland, a dream destination for him.
Beside each destination on his list he drew their country or state flag, as referenced from Dad looking them up online.
This morning, over breakfast, he was reviewing his list and added, “Do you know why I want to visit Egypt? Because, in case the scientists haven’t learned everything there is to know about the pyramids yet, I want to go study them, and then write a book called All About Egypt. And then I’ll write All About Canada, and All About Haiti and All About California. And in the corner of each book, I’ll have their flags.”
